Honor/Cheating

Lost with Dignity                             Won by Cheating

Malik Stewart was wrestling a boy (Mitchell McKee) who wanted to win the match to make his father who has cancer proud. Malik lost but he lost with honor. Instead of throwing a fit and being a sore loser, he went to go congratulate Mitchell and he even went to go give Mitchell’s dad a hug. Whereas, Roman Chapa cheated in the horse race. He noticed that he was losing and wanted to win so bad that he shocked his horse so that it would go faster. He cheated and got caught and now he looks bad. Lose with dignity. That’s the best kind of winning you can get.

Sophocles

“I would prefer to fail with honor than win by cheating.”
-Sophocles

He’s saying that he would rather lose knowing he tried or did his best than to win knowing he cheated and did the wrong thing. It shows how mature you are when you lose and you’re still a good sport about it. If people know you tried your best then you’re a winner in their eyes and yours. If you won by taking the easy way out and cheated then that doesn’t do you any good. Sure you get called a winner but that doesn’t really make you a winner. You just have the title winner. You know deep down you don’t deserve that title and the guilt is worse than you losing.

Memorial Day Weekend

This Memorial Day weekend I had went camping with my friends and I went hiking with family. My friends and I left Friday night to Crystal Lake. On Saturday, we went on adventures, played sports, we ate good food, we built a tent and made smores. Saturday night, me and two friends came back home. On Sunday, I ran errands with my sister. On Monday, I woke up at 5:20 and me, my brother, my sister and my sisters friend headed out to San Diego. We went to San Diego to hike up to Mount Woodson in Poway to see the Potato Chip Rock. It took us about 30-45 minutes to get up there because it was up some really steep hills. Once we got to the rock there was a line to take a picture on it so we left and headed back home.

Memorial Day

  1. Memorial Day is a day on which those who died in active military service are remembered.
  2. The purpose is to honor the men and women who died while serving the U.S. military.
  3. Memorial day was originally celebrated on May 30th but it is not celebrated on the last Monday of May.
  4. Some ways you can show honor and respect to those who have died in battle are;  you can visit a veteran’s cemetery or war memorial, take cookies to a nearby veteran’s hospital, go to a Memorial Day parade, etc.

Memorial Day used to be known as Decoration day because it was established as a day for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. The official flower of Memorial Day is the Poppy. This is the official flower because poppies grew in abundance in the battlefields of Belgium during World War I. It bewildered some as to how the flowers could grow in such a landscape.

To show respect and honor to veterans I plan to volunteer to feed them and to help make care packages to them and their families.

Dan Dierdorf

“If I’ve got correct goals, and if I keep pursuing them the best way I know how, everything else falls into line. If I do the right thing right, I’m going to succeed.”
-Dan Dierdorf

Dan Dierdorf

He’s saying that if he has the right ideas and the right goals and does the right thing to pursue that goal, everything else in his life will come at the right time. Everything good will fall into place and he will succeed from that. Setting a good/right goal is important. The way you pursue it is also important. You can’t take shortcuts because that’s kind of like cheating. Do all that you need to in order to achieve your goal but make sure it’s the best and right thing to do. You’ll end up succeeding in the right way. Everything along the way is going to be good and will affect your journey in a good way and eventually you’ll be successful in whatever you do.

An Internal Phenomenon

“The reward for doing right is mostly an internal phenomenon: self-respect, dignity (self-worth), integrity, and self-esteem.”
-Dr. Laura Schlessinger

When you do a good deed, do you do it for the reward or do you do it because you know you’re doing a good thing? Some people do things and don’t expect a reward out of it. Those are the truly good people. Some people do it out of knowing they’re getting something in return. The best feeling is knowing you did something good and that is the best reward. Feeling good inside and knowing you made someone happy or just doing a good thing. Does there have to be a reward? Does getting something in return encourage people to do the right thing? It honestly shouldn’t. Why does it matter if you get a reward for doing something good? Just knowing you did something good because you wanted to is the best feeling/reward you can receive.

Phillip Rigg's Four Success Tips

  1. Work Hard.
  2. Follow your passions. Do things you are interested in doing.
  3. Don’t chase after money.
  4. Serve others. Do good things for others, and good things will come to you.

When you are interested in doing something you should commit to it especially if it’s a passion of yours. All these tips work well together. Follow your passion and work hard for it. When you love doing something, you don’t really pay attention to what you get in return. You’re so passionate about it that you just do it because you love doing it. That’s why you shouldn’t chase after the money. If you love doing something, does what you get really matter? Not really. Sometimes your passion can affect others. If it affects others, make sure it affects them in a good way. Help them. Have a good passion that does good for others. Make others and yourself happy by doing what you love.

Indian Youth

“You knew what i was when you picked me up.”

The indian youth walked up the mountain and saw a snake. The snake told the youth to pick him up because he was cold and hungry and asked for the youth to take him down. The snake promised not to bite him if he helped him. The youth was being kind and generous and took him down. When the youth put the snake down the snake bit him and told him he knew what he was when he picked him up. An example of this can be drugs/weapons. When you do drugs you know what they do. You know the consequences and the side effects of doing them. It’s your job to do what’s right. When you pick up a gun and accidentally shoot someone, who is to blame? You can’t blame the gun. You picked it up, you knew what it could do, you knew the harm it would cause. When you do drugs you can’t blame the person who gave them to you or the drug itself. You knew what the drug would do to you but you still chose to do it. No one is to blame but yourself. You need to be smart about that stuff.

The Right Thing

“In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing.”
-Theodore Roosevelt

We make decisions all the time. Everywhere we go we make decisions even if we don’t plan to. When you do make a decision, make the right one. If you plan to do something bad, forget about it. Make the best and right decision. Do the thing that’ll make you a better person. If you choose to do something bad, what good comes from it? You’re only hurting yourself and others. That’s not making a good decision. When you make the right decision, it benefits you and others. So the best thing to do is make the right decision even in the worst case scenario. Some good will come from it.

Nothing

“Nothing is ever gained in doing what’s wrong.”
-Wilford Woodruff

You never get anything from doing what’s wrong. When you get in trouble for doing something bad, you don’t get rewarded. That never happens. When you cheat, you don’t get a medal. Instead you get in trouble. Nothing good ever comes from doing bad. It’s better to do what’s right and feel good about it and gain something that way. Whatever you gain may not be big or all that special but you know deep down inside, you did good. You chose to do the right and it made you feel better about yourself.

Softball

Lately I've been trying to get into a sport. I've always wanted to join softball but I'm too scared to go to tryouts or practice. I know I'm good at playing but I feel like I might not be what they want or what they're looking for. So I feel like I'm going to get turned down and not get accepted on the team. This year I was thinking about joining cheer but I feel even worse about it. I don't have the skills for cheer. People say I have the looks and that I'm loud so that may help me get in but looks don't get you everywhere. It's not all about looks. I'm not flexible, I don't know how to do flips or a cartwheel or a split. I feel like I've given up. I feel like I got everyone's hopes up. Not only am I not allowed to go to practice for not having my physical done but I can't go to tryouts either because I have to go to a graduation that same day. If cheer doesn't work out for me, then I'm going to work for softball. I will train over the summer and not only during the summer but up until season starts. Even then I'm not going to stop training. I've been told that I'm good at softball and all that stuff so I'm going to go for it. It's not only for me but also for my mom. I had gotten her hopes up last year when I told her I was going to tryout for softball and never did. I'm going to do this for her. I know if I made the team she'd be so proud. So I'm going to try my hardest and do everything I can to be an amazing player.

Do the right thing at the right time

“It’s A GREAT MOMENT when someone has character to step up and do the right thing at the right time.”
-Pam Knox
Pam Knox

It’s good to speak up when you need to. Let’s say there’s a fight going on and no one’s saying anything but letting it happen. That’s probably the right time to step up or speak up. Or maybe when someone drops money on the floor and they don’t realize it. Pick up the money and hand it back to the person. You’re doing the right thing at the right time. Don’t let people pressure you into not stepping up because you might look like a goodie goodie. Do the right thing and step up. It’s better to do right and feel good about it rather than to let it happen and feel guilty about it all day.

Word of Honor

“I have been asked what I mean by ‘Word of Honor.’ I will tell you: Place me behind prison walls-walls of stone ever so high, ever so thick, reaching ever so far into the ground-there is a possibility that in some way or another I might be able to escape; but stand me on the floor and draw a chalk line around me and have me give my word of honor never to cross it. Can I get out of that circle? No, never! I’d die first.
-Karl G. Maeser

What he’s saying here that his Word of Honor means everything. That’s his word of honor. He can’t lie. He can’t do otherwise because that’s like a promise. He said put him behind prison walls and he could try to escape but have him give his word of honor not to cross a chalk circle they put him in and he wouldn’t. Once you give your word of honor you have to keep your word. That’s making a promise to do something. You’re choosing to be honest and follow your word. Your word of honor is something you can’t break. Your word of honor is just as serious as a promise. Break it and you lose your trust with others. Break it and no one will be able to believe you anymore. Just like a promise, don’t give your word of honor if you can’t keep it. It’s not a game or just a word.

The 10 Indian Commandments.

The 10 Indian Commandments

  1. Treat the Earth and all dwells therein with respect.
2.  Remain close to the Great Spirit.
3.  Show great respect to your fellow beings.
4.  Work together for the benefit of mankind.
5.  Give assistance and kindness wherever needed.
6.  Do what you know to be right.
7.  Look after the well-being of mind and body.
8.  Dedicate a share of your efforts to the greater good.
9.  Be truthful and honest at all times.
10.  Take full responsibility for your actions.

For #2 I’d like to know who the Great Spirit is. Usually Indians or Native Americans look to animals for guidance. They think certain animals are good luck. So I’d like to know if it’s an animal and if it is what animal and why? I have a little problem with #10. Not that I don’t agree with it because I do but I have a problem doing it. I need to be honest and confront my actions whether they’re good or bad.
