What Dean Smith is saying is that he wasn't trying to become famous/well known for being the best coach. He just wanted to make his players successful. He wanted them to succeed in basketball by teaching them all he knew. And by doing that, his players did their best and won a lot of games. He was doing it for the players not for himself . He wanted THEM to succeed and he wanted THEM to be the best at what they loved doing. Him and his team had 879 victories and he did it for them. He did it so they could win and so that they could be famous and in the NBA.

What Dr. Randy Pausch is saying here is that if you lead your life the right way you won't have to worry about everything else. Do your best and live your life the way you want to. You can be a hard worker but you can also have fun doing it. if you wanna get somewhere in life you have to work for it. That doesn't mean that that's the only thing you should have on your mind. If you focus on that thing and that thing only you'll be miserable. Live life to the fullest. 

Educating the body, mind, and character

"Of all the work that is done or that can be done for our country, the greatest is that of educating the BODY, the MIND, and above all the CHARACTER, giving spiritual and moral training to those who in a few years are themselves to decide the destinies of the nation." - Theodore Roosevelt

What I think Theodore Roosevelt is trying to say here is that we should pay for attention to educating the body, the mind and character. If we decide to educate these three things one day it's going to pay off. We should also start teaching kids the right things so that later in life they will be all about education and being successful. If kids don't do what's right later on in life, our nation isn't going to be the way it should be. It's going to be messed up and nothing is going to go right. So right now we should focus on educating and perfecting these three things so that in the future the world is better and so our futures will be better also.

Volunteer Opportunities

• Volunteer tutoring/childcare/mentoring for abused children

        Volunteers must be reliable, responsible and trustworthy. It offers tutoring services for their child clients to assist in their educational success. The program offers their child clients with a big brother/big sister to engage in fun community based activities on the weekends two days out of the month.

• Visit seniors in the Los Angeles area (Bel-Air)

        Their organization will pair you with lonely senior citizens living in a senior residence for weekly visits.

• Shatterproof Challenge Rappel Event - Los Angeles, CA

        Shatterproof is a national organization committed to protecting children from addiction to alcohol or other drugs and ending the stigma and suffering of those affected by the disease.

• Animals Visitors Bring Joy!

         Volunteers will bring their calm, friendly, well-behaved pet to visit hospice patients in nursing homes, retirement facilities, and individual homes.

• Resident Health & Well-Being Volunteers Needed! (Huntington Park, CA)

        As a volunteer with LINC you will help low-income residents sustain their physical and mental health while preventing social isolation and depression within this vulnerable population. Volunteers coordinate the following activities such as exercise, nutrition and community engagement.

For a lot of these you must be 18+ so I can't really apply to any of these volunteer positions.

LAUSD Student Services

LAUSD provides us with sports like softball, football, lacrosse, soccer, etc. This allows students to be more involved in after school activities. They also have an A-G curriculum. A-G classes include three years of math and two years of World Language. This gives students the choice to go into a California 4-year college or start a career right away.

This means that you shouldn't let other people make decisions for you or let them control you and tell you what to do. You have to take care of yourself and do what you think is right. If you let others control you, you're not going to be happy because you're doing what others want you to do and you're not doing it for yourself. You need to make sure you're in control of all those things and make life the way you want to. If others are in control, you're gonna let everyone take control of you.
