Psychiatrist


Duties and Responsibilities: They diagnose, treat, and help prevent disorders of the mind. They prescribe, direct, or administer psychothareputic treatments or medications to treat mental, emotional or behavioral disorders. 

Salary: The average Psychiatrist salary is $190,054.

Education: All students who seek to enter medical school must pass the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). The Association of American Medical Colleges puts together this standardized test for potential medical school applicants. The test provides four separate scores for the various reading, writing and multiple-choice questions. Scoring well on the MCAT is helpful in determining a student's potential entry into the best programs.


Demand for this profession: There are currently 29,681 psychiatrist in patient care. Within that group 32 percent are international graduates. Psychiatry is attracting fewer American medical school graduates, while the demand continues to increase.

Reflection: I don't think I'd like to be a psychiatrist. Although this does sound like an interesting job, it's not what I want to do.
